This information about Isabel Hand Smith Bis hop reminds me of Elizabeth while Alexander was prisoner during the war. There are four news paper articles listed below. The first-born child in the mining camp of Hart, California, (see newspaper articles below) t he grandson of Isabel Hand, would be the 4th gr. grandson of Alexander & Elizabeth. Isabel Hand relationship to Alexander & Elizabeth: Alexander Harper & Elizabeth Bartholomew: their dau: Margaret Harper (1772-1856) & Aaron Wheeler (1770-1847) their son: Samuel Wheeler (1793-1831) & Lucretia Wheeler (1796-1836) their dau: Mary Harper Wheeler (1818-1892) & Jesse Fletcher Hand their dau: Isabel Hand - born May 1856. Married first: Samuel Newton Dexter Smith. Married second Joseph Cicero Bishop. Info on Isabel Hand: Newspaper article included on family group sheet from Henrietta Mellander: "Lonely Old Lady Leaves for Overland Manvel Trip Somewhere between Goldfield (Nevada) and the California line, a gray-haired woman with more g rit than most men, is a-teaming it alone across country, bound for the new camp of Manvel, i n San Bernardino County, California. She is Mrs. Cicero Bishop, perhaps 55 years of age. Some of her neighbors in Goldfield wer e among the first at the new strike and their descriptions of the ground made her enthusiasti c. She induced her husband to leave here by train ten days ago. Since that time she fixed u p the house, shipped her goods to the new camp, and on Monday at 3 o'clock, hitching up a wag on stuffed with provisions and other things, started off alone southward bound. She expect s ot make the trip of 200 miles in ten days. She has nothing to guide her excepting a fine m ap given her just before she left by J. Prescott Dyos, and which shows all the roads, waterin g places, etcl., along the route. Mr. Dyos himself expects ot leave tomorrow for Manvel." Approximately one year after Isabel Hand Smith Bishop made her trek to San Bernardino County , her daughter Mary Elva Smith Peters and her husband Emery Oscar Peters, followed. Mary Elva Smith Peters gave birth to the first child born in the mining camp. The name of th e town was Hart. Here are newspaper articles on the birth of the child, Edwin Hart Peters, born 29 April 1908. Hart, Cal., "Stork Makes First Visit To Hart With Usual Results The 29th day of April 1908, will be a red letter day in the history of Hart, for on that da y was born to Mr. and Mrs. Emory C. Peters, (Emery O. Peters), a son, and to our busy littl e three-months-old camp, a protege, for the boys have already taken him under their wing an d have started a subscription for a gold loving cup, to be made from the gold of the mines o f Hart. On it will be engraved the name, and Mr. James Hart, who is now in Los Angeles, wil l have the cup made in that city and will have the choosing of the design. As Mr. Hart is a c onfirmed bachelor, we don't expect him to know much about these things, and we hope the orde al will not be too great for him. already great things are predicted for this little son of a soldier of fortune, and well ma y we be proud of the lusty little man of nine pounds and no ounces. He comes of a hardy rac e of toil and ambition. On a bitterly cold day last winder, an ___ white-haired woman started on a dreary journey in a wagon across the desert, with her face turned in the direction of the new gold camp. Her h usband had gone with the first rush and being a woman, she was left behind; but nothing daunt ed, with a small map of the desert country, and a great deal of courage, more than is found i n many men, this white-haired old lady started on her lonely journey. No one will ever knwo all the hardhsips of that long, dreary desert ride, for with a smilin g face and a light heart, sanguine hopes of the future, she entered, a stranger, within our g ates. The question that now confronted her was what sort of work would she do, so she starte d a little bake ship while her husband worked in the mines. After a while, when things wer e going well with the old couple, their daughter and her husband, Mr. & Mrs. Peters, also joi ned the ranks of the soldiers of fortune, and it was out here in the shadow of the Piute moun tains, where hardy men of brawn and muscle are digging in the earth for gold, that this littl e mite was born. Coming of a race of people of such strength of purpose and ambition, well may our camp be pro ud of the little lad and there isnothing too great for us to prophesy for his future." Hart, Cal., May 5, 1908 - Newspaper Article "With the advent here of the first baby this mining community has to its credit so far, the s pirit of "the days of old--the days of '49" has swept over the camp and Hart tonight is as ha ppy and excited as ever was any of the pioneer mining districts of those othr days when the a rrival of a woman on the scene was an event of moment and a birt an epoch. To Mr. & Mrs. Emory C. Peters (Emeery O. Peters) has fallen the distinction of being the pare nts of Hart's first offspring and today they are being made fully appreciative of the honor o f their envious position. All the miners and the business men have formulated plans to commem orate with fitting celebrations the birt of Hart Peters, as the lusty youngster has already b een christened, and a fund is growing hourly out of which a gold loving cup is to be purchase d. The cup will be made from ore taken in the camp's first clean-up and the remainder of th e fund will be deposited to the credit of the Peters baby. If Hart Peters lives to surpass a record recently established by his grandmother, Mrs. B. H . Bishop (Isabel Hand Smith Bishop), he will merit all the early homage which is being paid h im now. Mrs. Bishop is the only woman who ever crossed Death Valley alone and without the gu idance of anyone. She followed her husband from Goldfield in a wagon and arrived there soo n after the first rush to these diggings." Hart, Cal: (Kern County) May 1908 - Newspaper Article "Mrs. Emory C. Peters (Emery O. Peters), mother of Hart's first born child, is now reported b y Dr. Murphy to be out of danger. Mrs. Peters was removed to the Norton house some days ago , where every comfort necessary for her recovery was provided by Mr. & Mrs. Norton, who are d eserving of great credit for their kindness and close attention to the sick woman's needs. M rs. Bishop, the young woman's mother, has been a constant attendant at the bedside of her dau ghter, and with careful nursing, Mrs. Peters is now on the road to recovery. "
