WILLIAM SHEFFIELD NORTON, M. D....Dr William Sheffiel d Norton has been a resident of Muscatine since 1893, and was known in the mercantile circle s until 1900. when he entered upon the practice of medicing and surgery, to which he has sinc e devoted his time and energies. A native of Ohio, he was born in Napoleon, Henry county, o n the 8th of July, 1867. The Norton family was an old one of the state, which was the birth place of his grandfather , Washington Norton, who died when a comparatively young man. He married Caroline Harper, wh o survived him to the age of seventy-five years, and they were the parents of four sons and o ne daughter: Jonathan Dorr, Elijah H., John H., Caroline T. and David Z. The eldest, Jonatha n Dorr Norton, was born in the Buckeye state and when a young man was employed in the railroa d offices in Cleveland, in which manner he made his start in life, laying there the foundatio n for his later success in business. He afterward engaged in banking at Napoleon, Ohio, and i n the year 1887 removed westward to Topeka, Kansas, where he still makes his home. He was fo r a number of years engaged in coal mining and in dealing in different kinds of fuel. He is n ow serving as sheriff of Shawnee county, Kansas, and while living in Ohio filled the office o f state senator for one term. He has ever been a man of considerable influence, his sterlin g qualities well fitting him for a position of leadership. While in Ohio he married Ada Sheff ield, a native of that state, as were her parents, William and Hulda ( Harrington ) Sheffield . The father was an attorney and banker and the mother engaged in the practice of medicine. B oth Mr. and Mrs. Sheffield died at Napoleon, Ohio, and both were nearing the Psalmist's allot ted span of three score years and ten. Their only child was Ada, who became the wife of Jonat han D. Norton, and they are now residing in Topeka, where they have made many friends. They h old membership with the Swedenborgian church. Their family numbered five sons and a daughter , namely: William S., of this review ; Mary, the wife of Dr. H. S. Judd, of Tacoma, Washingto n ; John H., who died at the age of thirty ; David Z., a resident of Topeka, Kansas ; Jonatha n D., Jr., who makes his home in Kansas City, Missouri ; and Ralph H., of Topeka. Dr. William S. Norton spent his youthful days in his native city and attended the public scho ols, after which he pursued a university course in Urbana, Ohio. Removing westward to Topeka , Kansas, he secured a position as assistant to the paymaster of the Atchison, Topeka & Sant a Fe Railroad, and subsequently took up the study of pharmacy, being graduated from the pharm aceutical department of the Kansas University, while in 1900 he was graduated as a physicia n and surgeon at the Kansas Medical College. In the meantime, in 1893, he had located in Musc atine, where he was engaged in the drug business until he took up the study of medicine. Afte r attaining his professional degree he began practicing here in 1900 in partnership with hi s father-in-law, Dr. Morgridge, the partnership being maintained until the death of the latte r, in February, 1909. Since that time Dr. Norton has practiced alone. He is now accorded a li beral patronage, the public thus giving expression of their confidence in his ability. He per forms every professional duty in a most conscientious manner, is careful in the diagnosis o f his cases, and that he is wise in the application of remedial agencies is indicated in th e excellent results which follow his professional labors. On the 7th of June Dr. Norton was married to Miss Myrta E. Morgridge, a native of Montrose, I owa, and a daughter of Dr. George O. and Ruth A. ( Casebeer ) Morgridge. The father was bor n in Ohio and the mother in Iowa and for thirty years Dr. Morgridge was a most successful an d honored physician of Muscatine, his many sterling traits of character winning him high an d enduring regard. At the time of the Civil war he enlisted for active service and became cap tain of Company H, Eleventh Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded in the battle of Shiloh a nd was also in other battles, was in the Atlanta campaign and was with Sherman on his march t o the sea. He took part in all of the engagements in which his regiment participated and retu rned home with a most creditable military record. He passed away in February, 1909, and is st ill survived by Mrs. Morgridge. Their family numbered but two children: Henry W., who died a t the age of thirty years ; and Myrta, now Mrs. Norton. By her marriage she became the mothe r of one daughter, Ruth May. Both Dr. and Mrs. Norton are members of the First Congregational church and he is serving o n its business committee. He belongs to Iowa Lodge No. 2, A. F. & A. M., and the Wyoming Lodg e of the Knights of Pythias. His political allegiance is given to the republican party, and f or three terms he served as county coroner, while at the present writing he is filling the po sition of county physician. Aside from his private practice he is surgeon for the Rock Islan d Railroad Company and he belongs to the Muscatine County Medical Society and the Iowa Stat e Medical Society, thus keeping in touch with the progressive work of his profession. Of this number th e majority hold the rank of first and second lieutenant, several are captains, a few are majo rs, and two Muscatine men, J.T. Davidson and A.A. King, have been promoted to the rank of lie utenant colonel. The third Muscatine County man to hold that rank, Lieutenant Colonel Clarkso n Elliott of West Liberty, was killed in action, with his men, some time during the latter pa rt of July or the early part of August, while fighting in the front line trenches with an inf antry brigade. The only commissioned navy man included in the homor roll is Ensign James Reul ing, who is serving as a doctor in one of the navel units. At least two Muscatne majors have seen active service in France. Major J.C. King, a graduat e of West Point, has been in France since September, while Major Fred McDougall, with a telep hone battalion, was one of the first local men to go overseas. He had been in active servic e for almost a year. The others, Major Otto Mull, former captain of Battery C, and Major Wilb ur Wilson, are still in training camps in this country. Fourteen Win Captaincies. Fourteen of the Muscatine county men hold the rank of captain. The last of the number to rece ive his commission, Captain Michael Cronin, was graduated from an officers' training school b ut a few weeks ago. One of the number, Captain W.S. Norton, received his honorable discharg e shortly after the beginning of the war. The other captains include several from Wilton wit h the local men, Captain R. O. Byrrum, with a veterinarian corps; Captain H.J. Carson, with e ngineering company; Captain Walter Curtis, constructive quartermasters' corps; Captain Michae l, Cronin, artillery; Captain E.B. Fulliam, Jr., medical corps; Captain Clifford Hakes, infan try; Captain Ralph Harding, Captain Arnold Jacobson, marines; Captain Frank Kincaid, sanitar y train; Captain Elliott King, medical unit; Captain Edward Roach, artillery; Captain C.R. Norton, 74, County Coroner, Dies Text portion of obit: Dr. W illiam Sheffield Norton, 74, Muscatine County Coroner and well known physician and surgeon, d ied suddenly of a heart attack at is home, 408 Broadway at 5:05 p. m. Saturday. His funeral p lans were indefinite this afternoon, awaiting the arrival of relatives from a distance. The b ody is remaining at the Hoffman Funeral home. Serving as county coroner here for more than 3 0 years, Dr. Norton was prominent in medical and official circles of the community. Dr. Norto n served as a member of the board of education of the Muscatine Independent School District o n two occasions and served as president of the board for several years. He was affiliated wit h Iowa lodge No. 2, A. F. and A. M. was a member of the Muscatine Elks Lodge and of Wyoming l odge No. 76, Knights of Pythias. Dr. Norton served in a medical unit in the World war and wa s a member of the Edward H. Bitzer post, American Legion. Born in Napoleon, Henry County, Ohi o, on July 8, 1867, he was the son of Jonathan D. and Ada Sheffield Norton. He attended the p ublic schools in the Ohio town and later took a university course at Urbana, Ohio. Moving t o Topeka, Kansas, he secured a position as assistant to the paymaster of the Atchison, Topek a & Santa Fe railroad, and subsequently took up the study of pharmacy, being graduated from t he pharmaceutical departent of Kansas university. In 1900 he was graduated as a physician an d surgeon at the Kansas Medical College. Coming to Muscatine, he first engaged in the drug bu siness and later formed a partnership with his father-in-law, Dr. Morgridge, in the practic e of medicine. The partnership continued until the death of Dr. Morgridge in February, 1909.D r. Norton married Miss Myrta E. Morgridge, a native of Montrose, Ia., on June 7, 1893. She pr eceeded him in death a number of years ago. Surviving are a brother, R. H. Norton, of Atlanta , Ga., an agent for the Santa Fe railroad; a sister, Mrs. H., S. Judd, of the state of Washin gton; a daughter, Mrs. R. G. Bauerbach, of Phoenix, Ariz., and a grandson, Richard Bauerbach , also of Phoenix. Dr. Norton was preceded in death by three brothers, John H. Norton, who di ed at the age of thirty; David Z. Norton and Jonathan D. Norton, Jr.
