She was born in 1854, the year tha t Ohio City, on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River, allied itself to Cleveland. Her father w as the mayor of Ohio City and had the honor of becoming the first mayor of the united city o f Cleveland. Norton was educated at Vassar College and Lausanne in Switzerland. In the fall of 1876 in a n impressive October wedding she became the bride of David Z. Norton, who began his career i n the banking business. Mrs. Norton mainly busied herself in the cultural and philanthropic l ife of the emerging industrial metropolis, serving as president of the Church Home for the Ag ed and Friendless, Chairman of the Board of Lady Managers of Lakeside Hospital and a board me mber of the Cleveland Institute of Music. Her contributions to the needs of the new College for Women were indeed great.
