James was the 3rd son of Nathaniel Eells, III, of Stonington, CT. He applied to the Legislature for permission to change the spelling of his name to "Ells", which was granted. He m. (2) Fannie (Smith) Ledyard, a widow, April 18, 1825 at Groton, CT. He d. Aug 28 1855 at N. Blenheim, NY and is bu. at Harpersfield, as also are his first and second wives. At age 77Of Harpersfield, New York.
