The note below is an example of the military experience John Harper had going into the American Revolution. Having been first been commissioned on January 5th, 1755, he had a measurable degree of experience.

Here, he applied the 'Law of Arms' to discipline in his Militia Unit. The Law of Arms had been around since mideaval times. One account states it's beginnings 1068 two years after the Battle of Hastings. It represents English Law as it is applied to war and military discipline. The term is still in use today.

          Upon Examination of John Frank an as Evidence and
          several other Affidavits in Writing produced to the Purpose, it
          appears that Capt. George Herkemer has behaved unbecoming
          a Gentleman in abusing and striking George Maginnis, contrary
          to the Law of Arms. For which we have resolved that he shall
          be casheered, and for the Future no more to Serve in that
          Capacity as an Officer                        + Sub
